How the season works
Reading a college football season
A regular season runs in numbered weeks from late August through late November. The bulk of games land on Saturday, with a thinner midweek slate that tends to feature teams outside the biggest conferences — often the best football available on a Tuesday night.
Each team’s schedule splits in two. Non-conference games are arranged school to school, sometimes a decade ahead, and mostly sit in the opening weeks. Conference games follow and decide standings, seeding, and who reaches a conference championship. That second half is where a season is usually made or lost.
The detail most likely to change is kickoff time. Networks select games into windows a week or two out, so a date can be fixed long before anyone knows whether the game is at noon or under lights. Where a time has not been set, it is shown as undetermined rather than guessed at.
FAQ
Schedule questions
How is the college football schedule organised?
The regular season runs in numbered weeks from late August through late November, with most games on Saturday and a smaller midweek slate. Each week's games are listed by date, with kickoff time and broadcast window where they have been confirmed.
Why do kickoff times appear as TBD?
Television partners choose which games go in which windows, usually six to twelve days ahead of the date. Until a game is picked up, only its date is fixed, so the time is shown as undetermined rather than estimated.
How do I find one team's schedule?
Open the program's page and use its schedule tab. The directory lists 138 FBS programs; schedules still being checked are labeled as partial. Browse by conference, state, or the A–Z list.
What is the difference between conference and non-conference games?
Non-conference games are arranged between schools directly, often years in advance, and tend to sit early in the season. Conference games are set by the league, make up most of the schedule, and determine standings and the conference championship.
Do games ever move after they are scheduled?
Yes. Weather, venue problems, and other disruptions can push a game to a new date or cancel it. Affected games are marked as postponed, rescheduled, or cancelled so the change is visible rather than silently dropped.
