The successor who never left
Utah has had six coaching-change pages written about it on this site's peers, and this is the only one where the new head coach had already been in the building for two decades. Morgan Scalley joined Utah's staff in 2006, shortly after finishing his playing career there as an All-America safety, and has been there every year since: recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator, safeties coach, and defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2025.
Kyle Whittingham announced on December 12 that he would step down after twenty-one seasons, and Scalley was named his successor the following day. Whittingham subsequently took the Michigan job. Scalley then coached the Las Vegas Bowl himself and won it 44-22 against Nebraska, so he arrives at his first full season already unbeaten as a head coach.

A good team, a helpful draw, new coordinators
The inheritance is strong. Utah went 11-2 and finished the season on a six-game winning streak, and returns key pieces from it, though both offensive tackles went in the first round of the NFL draft. Both coordinator positions are new, with Kevin McGiven on offence and Colton Swan on defence, the latter filling the role Scalley himself vacated.
The schedule helps. Utah misses Texas Tech, the conference favourite, and hosts BYU and Houston rather than travelling to them. The difficulty is concentrated in November, when the Utes play BYU at home and then go to Arizona and TCU on consecutive weekends, part of five Big 12 road games.
