FAQ
Conference questions
What is a college football conference?
A conference is a group of schools that compete against each other on a shared schedule and compete for a common championship. Conference membership determines most of a team's opponents and how its season is judged.
How is a conference champion decided?
Most conferences use standings from conference play to seed a championship game between the top teams. The format varies by league and has changed as conferences have added and lost members.
Why do teams change conferences?
Realignment is driven mainly by media rights and revenue. When a school moves, it changes both leagues' schedules and rivalries, which is why conference membership is worth checking rather than assuming.
