Bowl matchups are not set yet
Bowl pairings and the Playoff bracket are confirmed in early December, after the regular season and conference championship games are complete. Once they are, this page lists each bowl with its date, site, and the two teams involved. We publish matchups from sourced data rather than posting projections as though they were settled.
Until then, the regular season schedule and rankings are the best guide to who is in contention.
Getting in
How bowl eligibility works
A team needs six wins to be bowl eligible. The NCAA rule is that wins against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents must equal or exceed total losses, so 6-6 clears the bar and 5-7 does not. Only one victory over an FCS opponent counts toward the six, which is why a schedule padded with lower-division games does not open a shortcut.
Clearing that bar puts a team in the pool; it does not decide which bowl it lands in. That comes from tie-ins negotiated between each bowl and particular conferences. A bowl contracts to take, say, a Big Ten team against an SEC team, and selects within that pool — which is how a higher-ranked team can end up in a lesser bowl than a team it beat during the season.
In seasons when too few teams reach six wins, organisers may fill the remaining slots with 5-7 teams, chosen by Academic Progress Rate rather than by record. With 35 bowls outside the Playoff, roughly 70 teams play in one, and another 12 are in the bracket — out of about 136 FBS programs.
The bracket
How the 12-team College Football Playoff works
The Playoff stays at 12 teams for the 2026-27 season, the third year of that format after conference commissioners could not agree on an expansion to 16 or 24. Five places are reserved for conference champions: the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC winners, plus the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, the MAC, the Mountain West, the Pac-12 or the Sun Belt. The other seven are at-large picks made by the selection committee. Notre Dame, which plays no conference schedule in football, takes an automatic place if it finishes inside the top 12.
Seeding is where the format is most often misread. The four first-round byes go to the four highest-ranked teams overall, regardless of whether they won a conference title — not, as in the first year of the format, to the top four conference champions. Seeds 5 through 12 meet in the opening round on the home field of the higher-ranked team, which is the one part of the postseason not played at a neutral site.
From there the bracket is fixed. A lower seed that wins advances along the path assigned when the bracket was announced, so an upset does not reshuffle the draw. Quarterfinals and semifinals are hosted by New Year's Six bowls on a rotation, and the winner of each semifinal meets in the national championship game.
The calendar
Key dates for the 2026-27 postseason
Conference championship weekend ends the regular season, and the Playoff bracket and bowl pairings are revealed on Selection Day in early December. The Army-Navy game follows on December 12, 2026, traditionally played after the rest of the regular season has finished.
The Playoff first round is scheduled for December 18 and 19, 2026 at campus sites, with quarterfinals and semifinals running through the turn of the year. The national championship game is set for January 25, 2027 in Las Vegas. Non-playoff bowls fill the same mid-December to early-January window.
The New Year's Six — the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta and Peach — are the oldest and most valuable bowls in the sport. Four host Playoff quarterfinals in a given year and two host the semifinals, on a rotation, so which game each stages changes from season to season.
What to expect
Why bowl teams do not always look like November teams
Because most non-playoff bowls are neutral-site games between teams from different conferences, they produce matchups that would otherwise never happen. That is much of the appeal, and also why regular-season form is a weak guide to the result.
Rosters compound it. Players preparing for the NFL Draft or entering the transfer portal sometimes withdraw from non-playoff bowls, and a coaching change can mean an interim staff runs the game. Playoff teams rarely have this problem, since the stakes keep squads intact, which is one reason the bracket games and the rest of bowl season can feel like different sports.
FAQ
College football bowl game FAQs
What is a bowl game?
Bowl games are the postseason matchups played after the regular season, mostly at neutral sites between mid-December and early January. They pair teams from different conferences that would not usually meet, which is much of the appeal.
How many wins do you need to be bowl eligible?
Six. The NCAA rule is that a team must win at least as many games as it loses against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents, so a 6-6 record clears the bar. Only one win over an FCS opponent can count toward the six. If there are not enough six-win teams to fill every slot, 5-7 teams can be selected, ranked by Academic Progress Rate.
How many bowl games are there in 2026-27?
35 bowls sit outside the College Football Playoff, and the 12-team Playoff bracket runs alongside them. That is roughly 70 teams in non-playoff bowls plus the 12 in the bracket, out of about 136 FBS programs — so a little more than half the sport reaches the postseason.
How does the 12-team College Football Playoff work?
Five places go to conference champions: the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC winners, plus the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt. The remaining seven are at-large selections. Notre Dame, which has no conference in football, qualifies automatically if it finishes in the top 12.
Which teams get a first-round bye in the Playoff?
The four highest-ranked teams overall, whether or not they won a conference title. That is a change from the first year of the 12-team format, when the top four conference champions were seeded 1-4 and took the byes. Seeds 5 through 12 meet in the first round at the home field of the higher-ranked team.
When are the 2026-27 bowl games and Playoff played?
Bowl season runs from mid-December into January. The Playoff first round is scheduled for December 18 and 19, 2026 on campus sites, and the national championship is set for January 25, 2027 in Las Vegas. Non-playoff bowls are spread across the same window, with matchups confirmed in early December once conference championship weekend is complete.
What are the New Year's Six bowls?
The Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta and Peach — the six oldest and most valuable bowls in the sport. Four of them host Playoff quarterfinals each year and two host the semifinals, on a rotation, so which games they stage changes from season to season.
How are bowl matchups decided?
Outside the Playoff, placement comes from contractual tie-ins between each bowl and particular conferences, not from rankings alone. A conference agrees to send teams to a set of bowls, and the bowls then pick within that pool, which is why a higher-ranked team can land in a lesser bowl than one it beat.
Why do some players sit out bowl games?
Players preparing for the NFL Draft or entering the transfer portal sometimes withdraw from non-playoff bowls to avoid injury risk. Coaching changes add to it, since a new staff often arrives days before the game. This is why a December roster can differ from the one that played in November, and why regular-season form is a poor guide to bowl results.
Format and eligibility rules reflect the College Football Playoff structure confirmed for the 2026-27 season. Matchups are added once they are officially announced.
