The longest tenure in the sport, under question

Dabo Swinney has been Clemson's head coach since midway through 2008, longer than any coach covered on this site. He is 187-53, has won more games than anyone in the history of the conference, and delivered two national championships and nine ACC titles to a program that had not won the league since 1991.

Last season was 7-6, the worst in fifteen years. Clemson began it ranked fourth nationally and lost three of its first four, including at home to Syracuse. Its three losses that season came by a combined eleven points, in a programme that had previously won more one-score games than anyone in the country. Swinney's response was to take the blame directly: he did not get it done.

Quietly changing the method

Clemson's reputation has been for building through high school recruiting and declining to compete aggressively for transfers, and that reputation has become the standard criticism of the programme. It is now out of date. Clemson signed a substantial portal class for 2026, including cornerbacks from Auburn and Penn State, a defensive end from Colorado, a running back from SMU and a defensive tackle from Oklahoma.

Whether the adjustment came early enough is the question of the season, and it is worth separating from the louder one about Swinney's future. His buyout is reported at around sixty million dollars, which makes a change expensive regardless of results.
