Second in the country, and close to first

Oregon opens 2026 ranked No. 2 in the AP poll with 14 first-place votes, behind only Ohio State. The margin between them is among the narrowest a preseason poll has produced, and the two meet in Columbus in November.

Dan Lanning is in a fifth season, and in that time Oregon has moved from a program trying to stay nationally relevant to one expected to contend. That expectation is now the standard rather than the ambition.

Promoting from within

Both coordinators are new, and both were already in the building. Will Stein left to become head coach at Kentucky and Tosh Lupoi for the same job at Cal, and Lanning promoted Drew Mehringer to offensive coordinator and Chris Hampton — previously co-defensive coordinator — to run the defense outright.

It is a deliberate bet on continuity. Both had been in the box for two seasons and were being prepared for exactly this. Hampton was defensive coordinator at Tulane before arriving in Eugene.

The 2026 schedule

Oregon opens at home against Boise State, then travels to Oklahoma State and hosts Portland State on a Friday night, before Big Ten play begins with a trip to USC. Michigan visits Autzen on November 14.

The season turns on a trip to Ohio State on November 7 — a rematch of the top two teams in the preseason poll, and probably the game that decides the conference.

FAQ

ORE frequently asked questions

What is the ORE 2026 football record?

Oregon is 3-1 through 4 completed games: 3 wins, 1 loss.

When does ORE play next?

Oregon plays next against Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at home in Eugene, Oregon. The kickoff time is TBD. TV coverage is TBD.

Who coaches Oregon?

Dan Lanning is the head coach.

What conference does ORE play in?

Oregon competes in the Big Ten.

Has Oregon won a national championship?

Not yet. Oregon has won a Big Ten title, in 2024, and reached the CFP semifinal in 2025, but the program has never won a national championship, which remains the explicit target of the Lanning era.

What was Oregon's record last season?

13-2 overall and 8-1 in the Big Ten, finishing fourth in both the AP and Coaches polls. Oregon won its CFP first-round and quarterfinal games before losing 56-22 to Indiana in the Peach Bowl semifinal, having missed the Big Ten Championship Game itself that year.

Did Oregon play in the 2025 Big Ten Championship Game?

No. That game came down to Indiana and Ohio State, both unbeaten in conference play, with Oregon and Michigan just behind. It was a contrast with 2024, when Oregon beat Penn State 45-37 to win the Big Ten and finish the regular season 13-0.

What is Oregon's biggest question in 2026?

Whether the roster turnover pays off immediately. Oregon brought in 25 transfers, including both starting quarterback candidates, after a semifinal exit that exposed real gaps against Indiana. The program has the coaching continuity to fix that; whether the new pieces fit together fast enough is the open question.

How many Big Ten titles has Oregon won?

One, in 2024, beating Penn State in the title game during Oregon's first year in the conference. It capped a 13-0 regular season and the program's first time ranked No. 1 in the CFP rankings, before a loss to Ohio State in the playoff quarterfinal.
