ORE history

The program that changed how college football looks, in the loudest stadium of its size in the country.

Autzen

Autzen Stadium in Eugene is modest by the standards of the sport's biggest venues and consistently among its loudest. The design traps noise rather than letting it escape, and visiting teams routinely describe it as harder to play in than stadiums twice the size.

That advantage matters more in the Big Ten than it did in the Pac-12, since opponents now arrive after crossing multiple time zones.

ORE history

Building a brand from scratch

From the late 1990s Oregon broke the convention that a team wore essentially the same thing every week. The uniform program became a recruiting tool and then an identity, and most major programs now do some version of what Oregon started.

It was the first widely successful attempt to build a national brand on aesthetics rather than championship history, at a program that did not have a century of titles to sell. Oregon now opens seasons ranked among the national favorites.

FAQ

ORE history questions

Why is Autzen Stadium so loud?

Its design contains crowd noise rather than dispersing it, so despite being smaller than many major venues it is regularly described as one of the most difficult environments in the sport.

Why does Oregon have so many uniforms?

The program pioneered frequent uniform variation from the late 1990s, using it as a recruiting and branding tool. It has since become common across the sport.

When did Oregon join the Big Ten?

Oregon moved from the Pac-12 in the realignment driven by media rights, which added substantial cross-country travel to its schedule.
