A breakthrough, then a harder year
Oklahoma finished 10-3 in 2025 and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time under Brent Venables, doing it the hard way: four consecutive wins to close the regular season, against Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU. Alabama then ended the run 34-24 in the first round.
Venables has called the 2026 schedule incredibly exciting, which is one way to describe it. Three opponents made last season's playoff, in Georgia, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, and two more, Texas and Michigan, narrowly missed. September alone brings a trip to Ann Arbor and another to Athens.

A season against unfamiliar opponents
The more unusual feature is who is standing on the other sideline. Four of Oklahoma's ten games against power-conference opposition are against head coaches in their first year at that programme, among them Kyle Whittingham at Michigan, Will Stein at Kentucky and Jon Sumrall at Florida. Preparing for a staff with no film in its current job is a genuinely different problem from preparing for a good team.
The format has changed as well. The SEC moves from eight conference games to nine in 2026, so every member plays one more league fixture than before. For Oklahoma that means nine SEC games plus Michigan, which is why this is described in Norman as the hardest slate of the Venables era.
