A national final without a conference title

Miami's 2025 season was the best in a generation and produced one of the odder lines in college football. The Hurricanes went 13-3, beat Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss in successive playoff rounds, and lost the national championship game 27-21 to Indiana at their own stadium. They did not play in the ACC Championship Game.

That is not a quirk of one season. Miami has been in the ACC since 2004 and has never won it. The nine conference titles in the trophy case are all from the Big East, the most recent in 2003. A programme with five claimed national championships has spent twenty-four years without winning its own league.

The hard part is doing it again

Mario Cristobal is 35-19 across four seasons at the university he played for, having won national titles there as an offensive lineman in 1989 and 1991. His assistant head coach, Alex Mirabal, started alongside him on that line. Shannon Dawson returns for a fourth year running the offence and Corey Hetherman a second on defence, which is more continuity than most of last season's playoff teams have kept.

The pattern working against them is well established: the three previous teams to lose a College Football Playoff final, TCU, Washington and Notre Dame, all missed the playoff the following year. Miami also has to replace Carson Beck, with Darian Mensah taking over at quarterback.

Can Miami return to the playoff in 2026?

The schedule is manageable, with seven home games and only Clemson and Notre Dame as clearly difficult trips. The precedent is less encouraging: the three previous national runners-up, TCU, Washington and Notre Dame, each missed the playoff the following season.
