A season with two circled dates

Most first-year coaches spend a season being introduced. Lane Kiffin arrives at LSU already carrying history with two of its opponents. On September 19 he returns to Oxford, where he spent six years and built Ole Miss into the best regular-season team in its history before leaving for a conference rival mid-season. On November 21 he goes back to Neyland Stadium, which he left in 2009 after a single year in charge.

That is unusual, and it is the honest frame for the season: LSU's 2026 is as much about its coach as about its team. Whether that is an advantage or a distraction is the thing nobody can answer in September.

A staff rebuilt, a schedule that rewards it

Fourteen of LSU's fifteen on-field coaches are new. The single holdover is defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who enters a third season running a defense that was the better half of last year's team. Charlie Weis Jr. takes the offense, with Joe Cox as co-coordinator and Kiffin's brother Chris as co-defensive coordinator. Ed Orgeron, who won a national title in Baton Rouge in 2019, returns in an advisory role.

The schedule gives them an unusually generous stage. Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and Mississippi State all come to Tiger Stadium, which the program has described as the most attractive home slate in its history. Five road games and a late trip to Tennessee are the counterweight.

Why did LSU fire Brian Kelly?

Kelly was fired mid-season in 2025 following a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M at Tiger Stadium. He had gone 34-14 across three-plus seasons and won three straight bowl games, but LSU decided that record of consistent contention was not enough without a serious championship run.

What is LSU's biggest storyline for 2026?

Lane Kiffin's arrival is being described as one of the biggest coaching moves in the sport heading into the season. He assembled the nation's top-ranked transfer class in his first cycle, continuing the roster-building approach that defined his run at Ole Miss, but the margin for error at LSU is smaller than it was in Oxford.
