Judged against its own history

Alabama is one of the few programs measured against itself rather than against its peers. An 11-4 season with a playoff appearance would be a good year almost anywhere else; in Tuscaloosa it produced a winter of questions, because it ended with a 28-7 defeat to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and a 38-3 quarterfinal loss to Indiana.

Kalen DeBoer is 20-8 across two seasons since replacing Nick Saban in January 2024. That is a respectable record by any ordinary standard and an ambiguous one here, which is the particular difficulty of the job he took.

A roster rebuilt in a single offseason

Fifty players left the program over the offseason: twenty-two into the transfer portal, sixteen declaring for the NFL draft, thirteen through graduation. Ten were drafted, two of them in the first round. Alabama replaced them with twenty-one portal additions, a class 247Sports ranked fifteenth nationally.

Turnover on that scale makes the usual preseason questions harder to answer than normal. Continuity exists on the coaching staff, where Ryan Grubb returns for a second year on offense and Kane Wommack a third on defense, but very little of the personnel executing those schemes is the same.

FAQ

ALA frequently asked questions

What is the ALA 2026 football record?

Alabama is 5-0 through 5 completed games: 5 wins, 0 losses.

When does ALA play next?

Alabama plays next against Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, October 17, 2026, on the road. The kickoff time is TBD. TV coverage is TBD.

Who coaches Alabama?

Kalen DeBoer is the head coach.

What conference does ALA play in?

Alabama competes in the SEC.

Why did Alabama part ways with Nick Saban?

Saban retired after the 2023 season, ending a 17-year tenure that produced six national championships. DeBoer's task since has been sustaining a program built entirely around one coach's system without that coach.

How many national championships has Alabama won?

18 by the program's own count, including several from before the AP poll era, and the most of any current FBS program alongside Notre Dame's claimed total depending on how titles are counted.

Why is Alabama's quarterback situation unsettled for 2026?

Ty Simpson, the 2025 starter, declared for the NFL Draft after the season, leaving the job open. Washington transfer Austin Mack and 2025 backup Keelon Russell, a former five-star recruit, are competing to replace him, which makes the position the central storyline of Alabama's offseason.
