A new conference, mostly familiar opponents
Boise State is the only team covered on this site changing leagues in 2026, and the change is stranger than it sounds. The Pac-12 the Broncos join shares a name with the conference that nearly collapsed when ten of its members left, but almost none of its membership. Only Oregon State and Washington State remain from the old league; the rest of the new one has been assembled largely from the Mountain West.
So Boise State's conference schedule includes Utah State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State, all of which were Mountain West fixtures a year ago. The opponents are much the same, the rivalries carried across, and the name on the trophy is different. That is worth stating plainly, because a headline about joining the Pac-12 implies a step into the old West Coast league, and this is not that.

Leaving on good terms
The Broncos closed their fifteen-year Mountain West run with a third consecutive conference title, beating UNLV 38-21 in the championship game before losing the LA Bowl to Washington. That made seven league titles in all. The season before, Boise State went 12-2 and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in programme history, with Ashton Jeanty finishing runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.
The 2026 team is a reload rather than a rebuild. Maddux Madsen returns at quarterback, both coordinators are in a third season, and the departures have been covered with transfers and promoted backups. The blue turf remains the strongest argument in Boise State's favour: the Broncos were 6-1 at home last year.
