Georgia Tech's football history stretches from John Heisman's early powerhouse to Bobby Dodd's championship teams, the 1990 national title, and more than a century at Grant Field.

Four national championship seasons

Georgia Tech recognizes national football championships for 1917, 1928, 1952, and 1990. John Heisman coached the 1917 team; William Alexander led the 1928 team; and Bobby Dodd led the 1952 team. The 1990 Yellow Jackets, coached by Bobby Ross, completed an unbeaten season and shared the national title.

These titles belong to distinct eras of the program. The school has played in the ACC since 1979, while its earlier teams established the reputation that made Grant Field one of the sport's historic venues.

Grant Field and Bobby Dodd Stadium

Grant Field opened in 1913 on Georgia Tech's Atlanta campus. The stadium was named for Bobby Dodd in 1988, while the playing surface retained the Grant Field name. It is widely described by Georgia Tech Athletics as the oldest continuously used on-campus venue in major college football.

Today the site is branded Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field. Its location near downtown Atlanta is part of the program's identity, and the 2026 home slate includes Colorado, Tennessee, Mercer, Duke, Boston College, Louisville, and Wake Forest.

A rivalry and a recent nine-win season

The annual Georgia Tech–Georgia meeting, known as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, closes the 2026 regular season in Athens on November 28. The schools' in-state game is a separate fixture from Georgia Tech's ACC slate.

Under Brent Key, the Yellow Jackets finished 9–4 in 2025 after a Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to BYU. The team enters the rest of the 2026 ACC schedule at 1–3; the schedule and stats pages track that current season separately from program history.
