A hundred thousand people in orange, a stadium on a river, and a fleet of boats.

Neyland and the Vol Navy

Neyland Stadium sits on the bank of the Tennessee River in Knoxville, which produced one of the sport's genuinely distinctive traditions: supporters arrive by boat, tie up along the shore, and tailgate on the water.

The stadium is among the largest in college football, and the checkerboard end zones are recognizable from a still photograph — which is not true of many venues.

TENN history

The 1990s and after

Tennessee's strongest era came through the 1990s, when the program was a fixture at the top of the sport. Rebuilding toward that position has taken considerably longer than anyone in Knoxville expected.

The program has climbed back into national relevance in recent seasons, though in a conference where Georgia, Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma all recruit nationally, that climb is measured game by game.
