Recognized title seasons

SMU Athletics lists football national championship selections in 1935, 1981, and 1982. The 1980s teams remain part of the Mustangs' most visible football era.

The program later rebuilt and moved through several conference homes. Its contemporary team plays in the ACC, a move that brought regular games with Atlantic coast opponents.
