The 1953 championship
Maryland's official 1953 season page identifies the team as national champions. The Terrapins finished 10–1 after an unbeaten regular season; the Orange Bowl loss came after the title had been awarded.
That season belongs to the program's early ACC era, not to the current Big Ten standings.

The 2001 return to the top of the ACC
Ralph Friedgen's first Maryland team secured the 2001 ACC championship with a 23–19 win against NC State. The season took Maryland to the Orange Bowl.
The achievement followed a lengthy gap since the program's previous ACC title and remains one of the defining modern Terrapins seasons.
