BC history

From the undefeated 1940 team to Doug Flutie's Heisman season, Boston College's football history is tied to both the city and its Chestnut Hill campus.

BC history

An unbeaten season and a championship claim

Boston College football dates to 1893. Under Frank Leahy, the 1940 Eagles finished 11–0 and defeated Tennessee 19–13 in the Sugar Bowl on January 1, 1941. BC claims a national championship for that season; the school's own history notes that Stanford and Minnesota also claim 1940 honors. It was the program's defining early run rather than an undisputed single-team title.

For part of that era, the Eagles played major home games at Fenway Park and Braves Field. An original Alumni Stadium had been dedicated in 1915, but the current Chestnut Hill site opened in 1957 after Boston College had to stop playing at Fenway.

The Flutie years

Quarterback Doug Flutie won the Heisman Trophy in 1984. His last-second pass to Gerard Phelan beat Miami 47–45 and became one of the most replayed moments in college football. The Eagles then beat Houston 45–28 in the Cotton Bowl on January 1, 1985.

Flutie's place in BC history is visible at the stadium: the university unveiled a bronze statue near Gate D in 2008. The 1984 campaign remains a reference point for later Eagles teams without defining every era of the program.

Alumni Stadium and the ACC era

The current Alumni Stadium opened on September 21, 1957, against Navy. It was expanded in later decades, and the stadium's current configuration opened in 1995. BC lists a capacity of 44,500. The university joined the ACC in 2005 after playing in the Big East, bringing a different conference schedule to its established Eastern rivalries.

The 2025 team finished 2–10 and 1–7 in ACC play, ending with a win at Syracuse. That season record provides context for 2026; the historical milestones belong to a program spanning many more decades and conference alignments.
