Ohio

Columbus and the Horseshoe

Ohio Stadium opened in 1922 and remains one of the largest and most recognizable venues in the sport. Its horseshoe shape gave it a nickname that has outlived several renovations, and a Saturday there is among the loudest environments in college football.

The traditions are as fixed as the building. Script Ohio, performed by the marching band since 1936, is one of the few pregame rituals that draws an audience in its own right.

Ohio

The Game

Ohio State against Michigan closes the regular season for both programs, traditionally on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It has decided conference titles, playoff places, and national championship races, and in 2026 it is played in Columbus on November 28.

The rivalry's weight is partly historical and partly structural: both are perennial contenders in the same conference, so the game frequently arrives with everything still to play for. Coaches at both schools are judged on it in a way that is not quite true of any other fixture.

Ohio

Recruiting the Midwest

Ohio produces steady high school talent through Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, and the industrial towns between them, and the state's flagship program has historically had first claim on it. Holding that line against SEC and Big Ten rivals is a constant part of the job.
